Manly Card Monday #16

Manly Card Monday, Mother's Day and Father's Day

My two favourite dog breeds are dachshunds, which are everywhere in the stamping world, and staffies, which are much harder to get hold of – ironic since it’s the other way around in the dog  world! Staffies are everywhere on the streets, and have a bad reputation which is completely undeserved. They are loving and loyal and remember – there are no bad dogs, only bad owners.

Our family dog has the same name as me – Emma – as she was a rescue dog so we didn’t get to name her ourselves. So we call her Emmadog to differentiate! I wanted to colour this stamp so that it looked like Emmadog, who is a kind of mottled black and brown, except now she is around 19 years old so is mostly grey in the face.

I used Spectrum Noir markers and Gamsol to colour the image, which I then fussy-cut out and put to one side.

This paw-print paper came from my local craft store and was my starting point for this card. I love the masculine colours and thought they would be great for a father’s day card. First I cut down the red and gold to the size I wanted and then stuck it to the black card and trimmed around it so I had the border how I wanted (I did mess up a little bit on the left side!), then die-cut the stitched white rectangle and stuck that to the same black card.

I used the scraps left over to make the banner and the btw in the middle that her paw is hanging over. Finally, I stamped ‘happy dad’s day’ next to the dog.

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

This is probably my favourite stamp for masculine birthday cards. I’m a writer and a book-lover so I’ll buy anything with a good quote. People always smile when they see this one.

Mark Twain plaid

To begin with, I cut my little rectangle of white and masked off the sides. Then I blended Antique Linen Distress Ink with my round blending tool, coming in from the edges so that it grew darker at the sides and corners and lightest where I wanted to stamp my sentiment.

I stamped the quote in the middle and put that to one side, next stamping ‘Happy Birthday’ at the top of the card. Then I tied dark twine around this plaid patterned paper and stuck everything down.

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

Sometimes I think I might use puns a bit too much…

This little bear, just look at him. He’s such a cutie. That little sad face. I wanted him to look kind of tatty so I coloured him all in greys, keeping the texture a little less smooth than I would normally try to go for. Then I centred him on a piece of white card and stamped my sentiment around him in Jessie’s ABCs stamps from Lawn Fawn.

can't bear being away

Once I’d done this, I stuck the white card on some patterned paper and trimmed it down so that it left a border. Putting that aside, I ruled some lines in ballpoint pen across a blank card.

This is the first time I’ve used my own handwriting on a card! I don’t mind the effect but definitely need more practice.

This card stemmed from the idea of using the inkpad to stamp the main focus in the middle.

I stamped my black inkpad directly onto the white card, leaving this rectangle. I thought it had dried so stamped and embossed my fishing line image, but it was still damp and this meant the powder got stuck to the black background. I could have brushed it off  but chose to leave it for a dusty, distressed look.

I wrapped two ribbons around my piece of card and stuck washi tape at the bottom. Then I stamped ‘Happy’ at the side and ‘birthday’ on a separate piece of card, which I trimmed down to fit above the tape.

I’ll be drinking cocktails in Rhodes next week so there’ll be a bit of a break before the next manly card!

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

I’ve had something of a card-making frenzy this weekend, so this is the first of many cards I’ll be posting this week!

To make this card, I first created the distress ink background with a blending tool on white cardstock, then mounted it on black glitter paper and trimmed it close. When blending the ink, I left a white section for my sentiment: ‘It’s not how old you are, but how you are old.’

how you are old

I adhered this embellishment then started stamping around it in black ink. I chose balloons, candles and presents for a birthday vibe. I really like the monochrome with the splash of blue in the middle.

Manly Card Monday  #11 – Labrador

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

Darn it, I love dogs. I think most crafters love cats, but I’m not a fan. If I can find a fun dog stamp, I have to buy it.

This labrador stamp just embodies all the stuff that’s great about dogs. He’s definitely got that excitable look because his owner’s just walked in the door. You can just see his tail wagging even though he isn’t moving.

Manly Card Mon 11 - Labrador

He’s unmounted, but I didn’t bother buying any special products – I just put a bit of roll-on adhesive on him and stuck him to my acrylic block that way. It’s removable adhesive, so if you rub your finger over it afterwards, it comes right off the stamp.

I stamped the dog and coloured him in with Copic markers. Then I cut him out and shaded with pencil on my blank card, where he was going to go.

Once he was stuck down, I stamped ‘YO DAWG’ out of alphabet stamps and the happy birthday sentiment – and that’s it! A nice easy card.

Fun with a new stamp set! My boyfriend is a photographer so I thought this Avery Elle set was a great buy.

I was also playing with some new Distress Inks, blending 3 together and masking around the side for a white border.

When stamping the camera, I masked out the heart so that it looked more masculine. I then coloured with Spectrum Noir markers and stuck down with double-sided foam for dimension. Finally, I took all of the greetings from the stamp set and stamped them all, stamping #happybirthday in a different colour to highlight it.

A really easy card which I’ll probably duplicate quite a few times!

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

I went on a shopping stampede recently and treated myself to a few sets I’ve been wanting from Lawn Fawn for a while. This was one of them – probably their most reasonably priced, considering how many stamps you get and their versatility.

My card today is more boyish than manly, though the design is quite gender-neutral.

DSCF5374

First, I die-cut two polaroids out of white card, put them against a blank piece of card and drew inside the lines, so that I had a frame ready for my stamping. Then I went a bit stamp-mad, happily combining my monsters with a birthday stamp set from Clearly Besotted. The monsters set comes with a little party hat which fits perfectly on pretty much all the monsters and makes for a great birthday scene.

I coloured some and paper-pieced others. Once finished, I stamped my sentiments and started working on my background.

This is a great technique if you’re lazy, like me! (Or if your paper trimmer is going blunt, like mine!) I just ripped the patterned paper rather than cutting and laid them on top of each other until I got the effect I wanted.

Lastly, I coloured over the balloon with some clear Wink of Stella for a sparkly party effect.

The googly eye was a must as well!

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday, Masculine Cards

Almost forgot about Manly Card Monday today! I’ve tried a chalkboard effect this weekend, and gone for a hobby card because the gingham background stamp kind of made me think of golf clothes once it was all down on paper.

This is a really easy card to make, and you could make a ton all in one go.

I trimmed the black card to how I wanted it and started stamping my pattern. This stamp is long and thin, so I found the best way to cover the card was to overlap, alternating my stamping horizontally and vertically.

The sentiment is stamped in Versamark ink and embossed with Wow bright white powder. I added stitches around the black part with white gel pen and coloured the golf-bag stamp with Spectrum Noir markers, leaving a white border when I cut it out.

I have had a host of new products arrive today so I’m sure I’ll have a few posts up this week!

Manly Card Monday, Masculine Cards

I like the almost sporty look this card has without actually being about sports! I think the banner and stripes give a celebratory effect.

First I die-cut 2 circles, one in white and one larger one in patterned paper. Then I took the same patterned paper and die-cut ‘BEST’ using alphabet dies.

Best wishes1

I trimmed off the top of the larger circle and put the two circles together so the white one stands higher. Before adhering, I stamped ‘wishes’ under ‘BEST’, and ‘birthday boy’ at the bottom, as well as sticking a strip of ribbon across the larger circle and creating fake stitched lines with white gel pen.

Lastly, I trimmed down some black paper so that it made a strip down the middle of my blank card, and cut it into a banner. Then I drew some more stitch lines and stuck everything down.
