Champagne Birthday

Birthday Cards

Let’s get this out of the way – this DEFO should’ve been a congratulations card. Everyone who looks at it thinks it’s a congratulations card. But I decided to be awkward and stick a birthday sentiment on it, so it’s a birthday card.

Screen Shot 2016-01-24 at 22.06.38.pngFirst, I die-cut this champagne glass die (free gift from Cardmaking & Papercraft Magazine) 4 times – twice from vellum and twice from gold glitter paper. I trimmed off the top part with bubbles of the gold and stuck that to the vellum glasses, which were kept intact.

I then cut black cardstock to just under 6″x4″ and stamped this birthday quote in Versamark ink. It’s a clear ink so you can add whatever colour embossing powder you like over it. I embossed with Ranger ‘Enchanted Gold’ powder and then laid it all over more gold glitter paper, which I trimmed down to leave a small border.

Then I stuck the champagne flutes down with double-sided foam (you can see a bit of it here, but I did fix it when I noticed!) and stuck the whole thing on to a 6×4 blank card with double-sided tape.

Gorjuss ‘With Love’ Card

All Occasion Cards, Uncategorized

Hi! I recently made this ‘with love’ card for a friend’s birthday, but you could use it for any occasion. Read on for how I made it!

Screen Shot 2016-01-16 at 10.42.25

I started by stamping this Gorjuss (and she is gorgeous) little girl in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and watercolouring her with Distress Inks (I used the colours Peeled Paint, Victorian Velvet, Gathered Twigs and Antique Linen, and I just kept on layering them to get the shading effect). I then cut her out, leaving a white border around her.

Next, I took a piece of regular cheap white card and cut it down so that it was a centimetre or so smaller than my base card. I then embossed the bottom half of this with a Sizzix embossing folder (this is the one that came free with the Big Shot starter kit) and covered the halfway point with this vintage-style paper from a Hobbycraft paper pad (not sure on the brand I’m afraid, might be Docrafts).

I set the little girl against the white card and decided I didn’t like how that looked, so I die cut a circle from some more patterned paper from the same 6×6 pad. I then took some Lawn Fawn brown twine and wrapped that around a few times. I then tied a little bit more twine around the front of that in a knot. (I’m rubbish at bows so this is what I do instead!)

Originally I wanted this card to be a get well card, as I was going to put ‘Feeling under the weather?’ as the sentiment since she’s got her umbrella. However, once I’d put that circle behind the little girl, there wasn’t much room left for a long sentiment, and I didn’t like how it looked with the words all stacked on top of each other. (I wanted the little girl to remain the tallest thing on the card.) I fished through my stash and found this ‘with love’ sentiment from Lawn Fawn and stamped that instead. Then I decided it could be a birthday card for my friend Jess, who loves anything retro so Tim Holtz and Gorjuss are both perfect for her!

Finally, I adhered the little girl with double-sided foam for a bit of dimension, rounded off the corners with a corner punch and stuck the white card on to a piece of kraft cardstock which was the same height as my base card but left a tiny border around each vertical side.

Treat Your Gorjuss Mums

Mother's Day and Father's Day

So I recently discovered the full amazingness of the Gorjuss collection from Santoro London. I’d walked past these paper pads and other stationery items before but for some reason I’d never looked properly at them. Today, however, I went shopping and made a beeline for this section after the brand came to my attention on YouTube.

I also bought the Memento Tuxedo Black ink, which I’d heard great things about, and was really impressed with the crisp image I got (above). I decided to stamp the girl with the bunny as I loved my pink bunny toy as a child and immediately thought of an idea for a Mother’s Day card when I saw the stamp set.

I watercoloured the little girl with Distress Inks (Antique Linen, Victorian Velvet, Peeled Paint, Rusty Hinge & Gathered Twigs), then fussy-cut her out leaving a white border.

Screen Shot 2016-01-03 at 20.56.47

I used some vintage-style paper from a 6×6 paper pad (sorry, not sure on the brand) and cut this to the same size as my blank card. Then I trimmed down a strip of normal white card and stamped these sentiments. The ‘to my special Mother’ is from Clearly Besotted’s ‘Fresh Flowers’ stamp set, and the longer sentiment below is from Mama Elephant’s ‘Bear Hugs’ stamp set.

I also blended around the edges of the white strip with Antique Linen to add to the aged look of the card. Then I popped the Gorjuss girl up on some double-sided foam tape and attached.

I got a few other Gorjuss stamps today plus some other bits, and have a couple of deliveries due soon so will hopefully be putting up a ‘haul’ post in the next few days.

Mosaic Card

I recently got some Kuretake Gansai Tambi Japanese watercolour paints and wanted to give them a go with these lovely Clearly Besotted flower stamps.

First, I masked off the edges of my Ranger watercolour card and I stamped the flower images using Versamark onyx black ink (in retrospect I should probably have used a dye ink since this did bleed in some places). I then used a normal black ballpoint pen to add longer stems and an extra leaf to the flowers, as otherwise it would’ve looked like they were floating in mid-air.

I did some very basic watercolouring as I’m only a beginner – as you can see, I’ve tried to do some shading, but I think I need more practice! Then I did a grey-black background and peeled off the masking tape.

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 15.31.00

Next, to create the mosaic effect, I used my paper trimer to cut the final image into 6 pieces that I then arranged on the page until I was happy with the layout. I used double-sided tape to stick them all down on my blank card.

The ‘fabulous friend’ sentiment is from a Clearly Besotted stamp set but I can’t find it on their site so it might be discontinued. I stamped this on white card and then coloured in some Anita’s vellum paper with a purple Copic marker and mounted the sentiment on top. Then I cut around the edge with some craft scissors to get the wavy edge.

Finally, I covered all of the flower petals in clear Wink of Stella and then went over this with some Glossy Accents and left that to dry.

Punny Critter Cards

All Occasion Cards, CAS Cards, Critter Cards

I love puns and I love critters, so my favourite thing to do on a card is to put the two together!

I kept this french bulldog card really clean and simple, since I usually can’t stop layering on my cards. I trimmed two strips of green striped paper and stuck those along the top and bottom. Then I stamped the dog on my white background.

french kisses

Having used Spectrum Noir markers in warm greys to colour the dog and the heart in, I then used white gel pen to dot his cheeks. I stamped my sentiment with clear alphabet stamps and, as a finishing touch, added 3D glue (my cheap version of Glossy Accents!) to the heart and clear Wink of Stella pen to the dog.

The next card is one I’ve been wanting to  make for a while, ever since I bought the Paper Smooches Zoo Crew stamp set.

i look up to you

I trimmed white card down to work on (I very rarely stamp directly on to my blank card in case I want to wrap ribbon around, or in case any ink bleeds through to the other side). Then I stamped the giraffe and the hippo.

They are both coloured in with Spectrum Noir coloured pencils, the ‘Essentials’ collection, and blended with the white pencil on top. I considered adding Wink of Stella to these two but kept it matte to keep it a bit more gender-neutral (though of course there’s no reason why men can’t have a little bit of sparkle!).

Then I stamped my sentiments between and below the critters. Finally, I took a ruler and a regular ballpoint pen and drew a quirky border around the card.

Manly Card Monday #13

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

This card stemmed from the idea of using the inkpad to stamp the main focus in the middle.

I stamped my black inkpad directly onto the white card, leaving this rectangle. I thought it had dried so stamped and embossed my fishing line image, but it was still damp and this meant the powder got stuck to the black background. I could have brushed it off  but chose to leave it for a dusty, distressed look.

DSCF5602

I wrapped two ribbons around my piece of card and stuck washi tape at the bottom. Then I stamped ‘Happy’ at the side and ‘birthday’ on a separate piece of card, which I trimmed down to fit above the tape.

I’ll be drinking cocktails in Rhodes next week so there’ll be a bit of a break before the next manly card!

Kurt Vonnegut Cards

Inspirational Cards

We all love a good quote. This is one that I heard years ago and loved, and I never realised it was from Slaughterhouse Five. I need to read that book one day.

The quote works nicely with both a feminine design and a masculine one, so I made 2 very different cards using the same sentiment.

Kurt Vonnegut1

The pink card was made using a distress ink background in Victorian Velvet, mostly blending but then also using the ‘squashing’ technique with acetate for a bit of added interest. I created the strip on the more masculine card in the same way, with Antique Linen. I used masking tape on both for the white borders.

Kurt Vonnegut2

I stamped my sentiment and cut the words out into singles, then stuck them down on my pink background. Then I added a few sequins.

I stamped the quote a second time, this time on the Antique Linen background. Then I covered my blank card in this patterned paper from my stash and stuck the strip down.

“No New Products” Challenge!

No New Products Challenge

For someone who thinks she can teach people how to become thriftier crafters, I have an awful spending habit. I am a shopaholic with expensive taste and very little resistance… hence fad diets, pointless designer labels and nearly paying £6 for things like water bottles just because they’re pink!

But I’ve decided 2015 is all about new challenges. I plan to pass my driving test, move out of my boyfriend’s mum’s house and maybe even get a pay-rise. So I’m setting myself another challenge as of this moment – no new products for 6 weeks!*

That means ANYTHING. Even if I run out of double-sided tape or black ink, I’m not going to spend any money on craft stuff until 4th June (luckily I’ve just stocked up on both those things).**

Now, I don’t know how much of a challenge this would be to most of you. Some of you may only treat yourselves every 6 weeks or so anyway. But in the age of Amazon, I think a lot of people struggle not to buy basically everything when it is so easily accessible.

We’ll see how it goes. If I’m not crying by the end of it, it might become a regular thing. I’m also hoping it will help me rediscover some old gems in my collection – since deciding to do this, I have already remembered some fab designer papers that I haven’t used for months.

At the end of the day, you need very few products to make a card. It’s just the ‘want’ I’m trying to silence.

*(I will receive my subscription magazine within the 6 weeks, but I pledge not to use the free gift until after the 4th.)

**6 weeks today is actually 28th May, but I’ll be in Greece for a week from the 2nd, so that’s not so much of a challenge as I won’t be doing anything crafty! Except maybe a crafty cocktail.

Wedding Words

Wedding Cards

For some reason I really love making wedding cards. The great thing about this one is that you could use it for any wedding stationery – menus, invitations, RSVPs etc. I went for words that could follow ‘wedding’ but you could just have words that relate to it instead if you prefer.

I also love monochrome, so I really like the effect of this card with just a little touch of blue. The first thing I did was trim my white card down and rub on the word ‘WEDDING’ at the top.

wedding words

Then I started working on the stamping. It took ages because of assembling all the words out of alphabet stamps, but you could still make a lot of these in a short space of time because you’d assemble it once then stamp it several times. Once I’d stamped all my words, I stamped the cake image at the bottom (and decided to put ‘CAKE’ in capitals because of this).

Finally I did a bit of shading on the cake and added a touch of blue with Spectrum Noir markers, then cut down the black glitter strip and stuck that at the side.

Manly Card Monday  #11 – Labrador

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

Darn it, I love dogs. I think most crafters love cats, but I’m not a fan. If I can find a fun dog stamp, I have to buy it.

This labrador stamp just embodies all the stuff that’s great about dogs. He’s definitely got that excitable look because his owner’s just walked in the door. You can just see his tail wagging even though he isn’t moving.

Manly Card Mon 11 - Labrador

He’s unmounted, but I didn’t bother buying any special products – I just put a bit of roll-on adhesive on him and stuck him to my acrylic block that way. It’s removable adhesive, so if you rub your finger over it afterwards, it comes right off the stamp.

I stamped the dog and coloured him in with Copic markers. Then I cut him out and shaded with pencil on my blank card, where he was going to go.

Once he was stuck down, I stamped ‘YO DAWG’ out of alphabet stamps and the happy birthday sentiment – and that’s it! A nice easy card.
