Manly Card Monday #14

Birthday Cards, Manly Card Monday

Sometimes I think I might use puns a bit too much…

This little bear, just look at him. He’s such a cutie. That little sad face. I wanted him to look kind of tatty so I coloured him all in greys, keeping the texture a little less smooth than I would normally try to go for. Then I centred him on a piece of white card and stamped my sentiment around him in Jessie’s ABCs stamps from Lawn Fawn.

can't bear being away

Once I’d done this, I stuck the white card on some patterned paper and trimmed it down so that it left a border. Putting that aside, I ruled some lines in ballpoint pen across a blank card.

This is the first time I’ve used my own handwriting on a card! I don’t mind the effect but definitely need more practice.

“A Little Note of Thanks” distress ink card

Thank You Cards

Some partial die-cutting for you today, to which I have already admitted my lack of expertise! It took a few goes but I like the finished product.

First I blended Distress Ink in Peacock Feathers over white card, leaving a lighter space where I  planned to stamp my sentiment.

A little note of thanks

Once my background was ready, I trimmed the sides of the card down so that it would be slightly less than my blank. Then, I drew a straight line across the top in pencil, and stuck my ‘thanks’ die down with post-it tape, keeping the bottom edge just below my pencilled line.

I fixed my plates so that it wouldn’t cut the whole thing, and (after a few goes!) I cut the remaining parts with a craft knife so the word sticks up from the edge of the card.

I stuck the swirly borders on the card to get a faux-embossed effect. Then I stuck the ‘thanks’ card down with foam tape.

The borders were in my scrap pile from when I die-cut a load of them a while ago, and I used removable adhesive to stick them. If I were doing this card again, I would die-cut from scratch and used adhesive backing paper for a smoother finish.

Manly Card Monday #5 – Lager Top Card

Uncategorized

I felt like making a fun, punny card for today, so I dug out this beer stamp and got to thinking what sentiment I could make out of it.

The obvious was ‘Happy Beer-thday’, which I knew would go in the middle of the card. While thinking up puns, I started to stamp and colour my beer-jug image.

Lager Top card

Using Tombow and Whispers Strokes markers, I did a tiny bit of shading with grey on the foam and coloured in the jug with a sort of ochre colour that I think works quite well for this stamp. I also brought in orange for some dimension, but in the end I mostly used the yellow and kept layering it on to make it darker in the shaded areas.

Just using scissors, I cut around my images, leaving a white border so it looks as if they’ve been die-cut. (I didn’t feel up to messing about with that space between the jug and the handle, so that’s why I decided to leave a border.)

My sentiment had come to me at this point. Using Milo’s  ABCs from Lawn Fawn, I assembled ‘Lager Top of the Morning to Ya’, and stamped this not once, but twice, in the same place so that I got a slightly messier, almost distressed look.

After adhering the beer jugs, I took a ruler and a normal ballpoint pen and drew a simple border around my card. As it’s just a regular writing pen, the lines didn’t go down perfectly, but I felt this added to the less-than-perfect look I was going for so I was pleased with that.

Using the same alphabet stamps, I stamped “Happy Beerthday” inside the card and drew a second border around that too. (I’m sad that there’s no hyphen in this stamp set – I’m a grammar Nazi so it was hard accepting that I had to spell it that way!)

“Sorry You’re Leaving” Tag

Uncategorized

My friend is leaving work this week and I haven’t felt up to making a card. So I decided to make her a tag to go on her leaving present instead. After cats, her favourite animal is an octopus, so I put Lawn Fawn’s “Critters in the Sea” in the spotlight.

Firstly, I stamped the octopus on stripy pink paper from the Let’s Polka collection. I heat-embossed him to make him nice and bold on the patterned paper and got to work fussy-cutting.

Then I die-cut one gift-tag from plain card and one from patterned vellum. This vellum has little swirls on it that are almost like seashells so it worked well for this ocean theme.

The waves are stamped in Distress Ink, but this can be a bit full-on so I decided not to put it on my project until I had already stamped it on some scrap paper off to the side. Next, I took the “just waving hello” sentiment as well as Milo’s Alphabet stamps, and stamped only the ‘just waving’ part, spelling BYE underneath.

I cut the vellum into a banner and foam-adhered the octopus. Then I hole-punched some leftover patterned paper and stuck the white tag on top, so I could cut around it to make a border. Lastly, I threaded yellow baker’s twine through – I love the pink and yellow together.

I also stamped “Sorry you’re leaving” on the back in those same alphabet stamps, but I didn’t think to take a picture – sorry!
